President's Message

Friends and colleagues,

Welcome to the Northwest Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives (NWAAAE).  As the largest geographic Chapter of AAAE, our members represent a widely diverse set of airports, from large hubslike Seattle-Tacoma, Salt Lake City, Portland and Denver, airports that are vital to the National Airspace System (NAS), togeneral aviation airports across our eight states that are equallyimportant to their respective communities.  From urban city centers to rural townships far from metropolitan areas, we represent airports in more diverse settings than any other Chapter.  In addition, we proudly represent our Canadian members to the north, covering the Provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, the Yukon Territories, and the Northwest Territories.

When I think about all the differences our airports represent, an old saying comes to mind, one which really applies in our case.  You’ve heard it, of course, and it’s the saying that “You’ve seen one airport…you’ve seen one airport.”  What it says is that every airport develops over time to meet the particular needs of their community, as they should, and therefore they are all different, all unique.  Still, despite all our individual differences, we all have much in common.  Large or small, commercial or general aviation, all of us face the same issues and rely on the same set or partners to fulfill our mission in the NAS and to our communities.

In reflecting on that commonality, and in view of the issues of our time, it’s increasingly apparent that we need to come together, that there has never been a more important time for us all to make our voices heard.  From discussions of Air Traffic Modernization and Privatization to stable federal funding for the FAA, from efforts to raise the Passenger Facility Charge for commercial airports, to a potential infrastructure funding package promised by our President, Congress and our Administration need to hear from you.  The AAAE Legislative Affairs staff labor daily to provide all of us with information regarding each of these issues, but it is up to us to make our voices heard where it counts, with each and every one of our legislators and State leaders.  Now is that time.

There’s more to your Chapter than the important role of having our collective voices heard, though.  In addition, there are a number of great opportunities available to members of the NW Chapter.  The mission of NWAAAE is “to promote airports by developing, connecting and educating aviation industry professionals” and we mean it.Opportunities the Chapter offers include internships available to students and to airports, scholarships for students in college for aviation related degrees and other related studies, and scholarships for AAE accreditation.  Last year, the Chapter initiated scholarships for the ACE program and contributed to a new AAAE Women in Aviation scholarship.  This is a great time to get more involved in your Chapter.

What a great industry we work in, where airports connect people for business, for family, for exploring new and exciting places, and for a break from busy lives. Don’t ever forget that you contribute to this important mission and that what you do makes a difference!  This is your Chapter and this is our year.  Let’s make it a great one.

Greg Phillips, AAE
